Background to a Study of Damage Mechanics in Masonry Panels

Masonry in one form or another is used in most areas of the world that are prone to interplate or intraplate earthquakes. Masonry structures constructed from traditionally fired or stone bricks have one characteristic that sets them apart from most other structures. If a masonry building is well constructed, it can last for millenniums. Research in the field of Damage Mechanics has identified two distinct failure mechanisms in ceramic materials -static and a dynamic. This study concentrates on ceramics constructed from unreinforced brick masonry subjected to in-plane dynamic loads. The aim of this paper is to look at some background issues related to the loading pattern, specially related earthquake data, the development of the test program, and of the masonry panels.
